Standard<\/span> and characteristics<\/h2>\n

The Canadian Horse is a reflection of the country that produced it. Shaped by a harsh, extreme climate of Quebec, cradle of the breed, formed by the hard work it did in colonial times, it developed unparallelled strength, endurance and robustness. It is loyal, docile, willing, sensible and intelligent.<\/p>\n

  • The Canadian Horse has a rather compact shape<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Its sturdy build<\/strong> makes it strong and powerful.<\/li>\n
  • Its back<\/strong> and loins<\/strong> are broad, short and strong.<\/li>\n
  • The neck<\/strong> is fairly arched and gracefully attached, strong and powerful, without being heavy or too short.<\/li>\n
  • The breast<\/strong> is broad, the shoulders<\/strong> are rather long and sloping rather than straight.<\/li>\n
  • The head<\/strong> is short and harmonious, the forehead<\/strong> is broad with a straight profile<\/strong>, the ears<\/strong> are small and set well apart.<\/li>\n
  • The eyes<\/strong> are large and expressive, with a kind, wise expression<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • The hair<\/strong> is generally long and abundant.<\/li>\n
  • Though the predominant colour<\/strong> is black (around 70% of the stock), all colours and white markings are accepted.<\/li>\n
  • Its height<\/strong> varies between 14 to 16 hh (1.42 m to 1.62 m) and its weight<\/strong> between 1,000 and 1,400 lbs (450-635 kg)<\/li>\n
  • Its movement<\/strong> is free and vigorous (with good propulsion and limb elevation, and no excessive knee movement).<\/li>\n
  • Leg conformation<\/strong> must be straight, and the feet<\/strong> are large, strong and solid.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    A horse with many faces<\/h2>\n

    Since the opening of the first genealogy registry in 1907 and the first definition of the standard (just over 100 years ago), the breed has already had to deal with a reopening of the books due to possible disappearance, and cross-breeding trials during Deschambault’s time (after 1967). Even if the registries have been closed since the beginning of the 1980s and no foal can enter them if both parents are not themselves registered, no DNA test of parentage was guaranteeing the ancestry of the offspring. It is only since the year 2000, from which DNA parentage testing was made compulsory, that the real purity of registered subjects can be guaranteed.<\/p>\n

    Somehow because of this, there is still a certain diversity of phenotypes within the breed today. Just as at the time we distinguished the “roadster type\u201d from the “coach type” type, several models now seem, in fact, to co-exist, ranging from a more “traditional” model (shorter and stockier built, with substantial bone), up to a more “sporty” model (a little longer, slender and lighter, also with substantial bone, good balance and all the breed characteristics).<\/p>\n

    In a context where the Canadian horse is still threatened with extinction, the Canadian Horse Breeders Association has chosen for the moment to adhere to the orientations advocated by the Animal Pedigree Act (APA), namely “that the standards of the breed should refer to the range of expressed traits considered to be acceptable […] rather than an ideal animal\u201d and currently focuses on developing tools to:<\/p>\n

    • Increase the pace of birth to prevent the breed from disappearing;<\/li>\n
    • Promote the use of the broadest genetic pool possible to prevent inbreeding;<\/li>\n
    • Educate breeders and raise awareness regarding the importance of selecting breeding animals that are free of genetic defects or diseases.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      The Canadian Horse is a reflection of the country that produced it. Shaped by a harsh, extreme climate, formed by the hard work it did in colonial times, it developed unparallelled strength, endurance and robustness. It is loyal, docile, willing, sensible and intelligent.<\/p>\r\n

        \r\n
      • The Canadian Horse has a rather compact shape<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n
      • Its sturdy build<\/strong> makes it strong and powerful.<\/li>\r\n
      • Its back<\/strong> and loins<\/strong> are broad, short and strong.<\/li>\r\n
      • The neck<\/strong> is fairly arched and gracefully attached, strong and powerful, without being heavy or too short.<\/li>\r\n
      • The breast<\/strong> is broad, the shoulders<\/strong> are rather long and sloping rather than straight.<\/li>\r\n
      • The head<\/strong> is short and harmonious, the forehead<\/strong> is broad with a straight profile<\/strong>, the ears<\/strong> are small and set well apart.<\/li>\r\n
      • The eyes<\/strong> are large and expressive, with a kind, wise expression<\/strong>.<\/li>\r\n
      • The hair<\/strong> is generally long and abundant.<\/li>\r\n
      • Though the predominant colour<\/strong> is black (around 70% of the stock), all colours and white markings are accepted.<\/li>\r\n
      • Its height<\/strong> varies between 14 to 16 hh (1.42 m to 1.62 m) and its weight<\/strong> between 1,000 and 1,400 lbs (450-635 kg)<\/li>\r\n
      • Its movement<\/strong> is free and vigorous (with good propulsion and limb elevation, and no excessive knee movement).<\/li>\r\n

        A horse with many faces<\/h2>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.10.7\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]Though the standard is well defined, some descriptions are fairly broad and flexible. There is therefore, still today, a certain phenotype diversity resulting from various factors (it\u2019s a relatively \u201cnew\u201d breed, DNA parentage tests have only been mandatory since the early 2000s, lack of tools to help breeders select breeding animals, etc.).\r\n\r\nDespite the conflicts this may occasionally create within the breeder community, two types always seem to stand out:\r\n
          \r\n\t
        • A smaller, shorter and stockier build, with substantial bone (sometimes referred to as the \u201cold type,\u201d but we prefer using \u201ctraditional type\u201d to highlight their timelessness);<\/li>\r\n\t
        • A slightly longer, lighter and more agile build, also with substantial bone, good balance and all the breed characteristics (commonly called the \u201csportive type\u201d).<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_gallery gallery_ids=\"1425,1426,1427,1424\" show_title_and_caption=\"off\" show_pagination=\"off\" _builder_version=\"4.9.10\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"][\/et_pb_gallery][et_pb_text _builder_version=\"4.10.7\" _module_preset=\"default\" global_colors_info=\"{}\"]

          Rather than trying to decide which to favour, the Canadian Horse Breeders Association is currently focusing<\/strong> on developing tools to:<\/p>\r\n

            \r\n
          • Increase the pace of breeding to prevent the breed from disappearing;<\/li>\r\n
          • Promote the use of the broadest genetic pool possible;<\/li>\r\n
